This tutorial will guide you on how to install WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those who didn’t know, WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform instant messaging client for smartphones that operates under a subscription business model. It uses the Internet to send text messages, images, videos, user location, and audio media messages to other users using WhatsApp.

While writing this article we assume you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the Terminal/shell, and most importantly, you have a stable version of Ubuntu installed. The installation is quite simple and you will need to be logged in as a root user, if not you will need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands in order to get root privileges. We will show you the step-by-step installation of WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. You can also follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint and PopOS!.

Install WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Step 1. Update your Ubuntu system

First, Let us make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Install WhatsApp Messenger using Snap:

By default, WhatsApp is not available on Ubuntu 20.04 base repository. To install WhatsApp run the following command below to add WhatsApp using Snap package manager. If Snap package manager is not already installed then you can install Snap Package Manager by running the following command below:

sudo apt install snapd

To install WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, simply use the following command:

sudo snap install whatsapp-for-linux

Step 3. Accessing WhatsApp Messenger on Ubuntu Dekstop.

Once successfully installed, Search for WhatsApp via the Activities Search Bar on the Ubuntu system. Next, you can now scan the QR code and get connected to your System. Alternatively, you can also access WhatsApp from the web by accessing the URL https://web.whatsapp.com.
